NVQs

NVQ Qualifications

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are work-based qualifications that prove your existing skills and experience to a nationally recognised standard — no exams, no classroom study, just evidence of what you already do on-site. Every CSCS card above Green level requires one.

How NVQs Work

An NVQ assessor reviews evidence of your work — site photos, witness statements from supervisors, professional discussion, and observation — rather than testing you on new material. Most learners complete their NVQ in 1–3 months, depending on how much evidence they already have.

Already Operating Plant or Machinery?

If you hold a Red CPCS or NPORS "Trained Operator" card, there's a separate per-machine-category NVQ Level 2 route that upgrades it to a Blue "Competent Operator" card. This leads to a Blue CPCS or NPORS card, not a CSCS card — CPCS/NPORS is a separate scheme from CSCS.

Funding Note

As of January 2026, CITB pays a flat £600 achievement grant for completed NVQs from Level 2 to Level 6, regardless of level (previously, higher levels attracted larger grants). Level 7 qualifications starting after 8 December 2025 are no longer supported for standard CITB funding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take an exam to get an NVQ?

No. NVQs are assessed through evidence of your existing work, not written exams. The only test required alongside your NVQ is the CITB HS&E Test, which is a separate requirement for your CSCS card.

How long does an NVQ take to complete?

Most learners complete their NVQ within 1–3 months, though this depends on how much workplace evidence you already have and how quickly you can gather it. We support learners for up to 12 months.

Do I need any prior qualifications to start an NVQ?

No prior qualifications are required — NVQs are based on demonstrating the skills and experience you already have on-site, from Level 2 through to Level 7.
