If you're new to construction, or looking to progress your career, the CSCS card colour system can be confusing at first. Here's a straightforward breakdown of what each level actually means.
Green — Labourer
The entry point. Requires the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test, plus a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. No prior experience needed — this is where most people entering the industry start. See the Green Card pathway →
Blue — Skilled Worker
For qualified tradespeople. Requires an NVQ Level 2 in your specific trade (bricklaying, plastering, carpentry, and so on), on top of the HS&E Test. See the Blue Card pathway →
Gold — Supervisor
For those supervising a team or trade area on-site. Requires an NVQ Level 3, or an Occupational Work Supervision qualification, typically alongside an SSSTS certificate. See the Gold Card pathway →
Black — Manager
The most senior card, for project and site managers. Requires an NVQ Level 6 or 7 in Construction Site Management, typically alongside an SMSTS certificate. See the Black Card pathway →
A few other cards worth knowing about
- Red Provisional and Red Experienced Worker cards are time-limited bridging cards, for those registered on a course or demonstrating experience while working toward a full card
- Apprentice and Trainee cards cover those on structured training programmes
- AQP and PQP cards are for those with relevant academic qualifications or professional body membership, working in non-trade construction roles
How progression actually works
Most people move up one level at a time — Green to Blue typically takes as long as it takes to gather NVQ Level 2 evidence (often 1–3 months once you start), and Blue to Gold usually requires a couple of years of relevant experience on top of the next qualification. There's no fixed timetable — it's based on what you can evidence, not time served.
